Ask me anything

Brent Tyler at the Streaming Cafe, the last show of his Big Love tour, the big guy with the smooooth voice!  The musicianship within his band is nothing to sneeze at either, the guitar and bass were amazing.  He is wrapping up the recording of his next album at the brand new Bottega recording studio in Kelowna….best of luck with your music making Brent, you had the Kelowna crowd LOUD! Check out Brent’s music and his fan-funded campaign at brenttyler.com

The Grammys will be a lot more interesting for me this year….here are nominated artists that I have seen perform in 2013.  Also nominated (but no photos) is Steve Earle (Kelowna Community Theatre) for Americana Roots Song, and the Del McCoury Band (Merlefest North Carolina) for Bluegrass Album.  Already looking forward to seeing three nominees again in 2014….Milk Carton Kids in Vancouver (June), and Steep Canyon Rangers in North Carolina (April), Tim O’Brien and Darrell Scott in North Carolina (April).

The Tourist Company, an up and coming Vancouver band, at their Streaming Cafe show.  This was the band’s fourth show?  Wow, I can’t wait to see them a year from now!  First set was from their debut album and had the audience on its feet.  Second set was all original, unreleased songs for their yet-to-be recorded second album.  Have a listen to Brother Wake Up, available on Noisetrade and bandcamp.

Avett Brothers, Orpheum Theatre October 17, 2013.   Quickest guitar change ever during Never Been Alive!  Their instrument techs have to pay attention!  I was lucky that I happened to catch this moment - the audience loved it!  Previous song was Kick Drum Heart, you can imagine the beating his guitars take during that awesome KDH solo!

Matt Mays performing at the Mary Irwin Theatre in Kelowna, November 9, 2013 on his acoustic Canadian tour.  Even though this was a solo tour without his band, he was accompanied on a portion of his set by the talented opening artist, Adam Baldwin, and Matt’s 12 string guitar filled the theatre with it’s rich, strong sound.  With that 12 string and his unique voice, and the great acoustics in the theatre, the music last night was fantastic.   I especially loved the acoustic version of Take It On Faith, and the audience singalong to Chase The Light.  As Matt said, the vibe was just a little different from his last appearance in Kelowna opening an arena show for Kid Rock!  Different, yes!  Better, YES!  A great night!

Good For Grapes at the Streaming Cafe Kelowna BC, November 2, 2013

Good For Grapes, Streaming Cafe, November 2, 2013.  It was showtime at the Streaming Cafe, but where was the band??  Battling winter conditions on the highway from Calgary to Kelowna, that’s where.  The bus pulled in, fastest load in I’ve ever seen, soundcheck on the fly, and the music started!  A talented young band, Peak Performance Project contenders, played two sets of all-original music to an over-flowing cafe….one girl from the audience that I met had driven four hours just to get to this show!  Loved their songs, and as a band they seem totally at home on stage, and are enjoying themselves immensely!  The Streaming Cafe show was the last on this Good For Grapes tour before the Peak finals later this month.  Best of luck guys, we’ll be seeing more of you I’m sure!  Check out their new album Man On The Page, available on itunes

Best.Show.Ever.  No opening act, we were treated to an all-Avett night at the beautiful Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver.  By far the best Avett show that I have seen, we were stage-side for two and a half hours, the crowd was on their feet and energized by their dynamic performance.  As always, the setlist was a mix of old and new favourites from their catalogue going back over a decade, with a cover of the traditional Jordan Am A Hard Road To Travel thrown in for good measure.  Most memorable moment has got to be Seth’s Kick Drum Heart solo directly in front of me!  No clear photos of that moment, too much excitement!
